Belly's men show grit and determination to take three points
With Paul Holmes absent, McCurdy returned to the midfield and one other change saw club stalwart Davy-John McBride (pictured) donning the gloves to replace the suspended Reilly. It was McBride who was the main topic of conversation, when he misjudged a speculative effort from Damien Gaile which somehow ended up in the net. Colin McFarlane made it 2-0 shortly afterwards, when he latched on to a header from Gaile. With the Old Boys in trouble, it was left to Andy Shepherd to pull one back five minutes before half-time and then, just on the interval, Ian Bellingham nodded home to make the scores level. The Villagers regained the lead early in the second period, Glebe responded, forcing a series of corners which bore fruit when Bellingham and then Les Nicholl scored to make it 4-3 to Glebe. Shepherd scored his second before Nicholl ended the day’s scoring with a free-kick. Despite Villager’s best efforts they were unable to get past McBride who produced several fine stops at the end of the tie.
