Back in the nineteen fifties and sixties Joe worked in the BSR where he was manager of arguably one of the best Junior soccer sides to come out of the city winning many trophies. He had some wonderful players like goalkeeper Phil Donaghy, midfielders Gerry Bradley and John McCorriston with the superb Joe McKeever up front.
In later years after starting work in Du Pont he became one of the leading figures within the North West Football Association where he was never afraid to voice his opinion, he held many posts within the Association and also became a member of the Irish Football Association where he enjoyed many away trips with the International side.
