CCTV identified the defendant as the person who had taken the wallet.
Mr Joe McDonald, representing the defendant, said his client had quite an extensive record but had no convictions for dishonesty.
He explained that the owner of the wallet left it on the bus and this was an opportunistic offence by McCrea.
Mr McDonald added that the defendant deeply regretted what he had done.
He had been short of funds at the time having just lost his job.
