Rise in number of ‘sextortion’ victims say PSNI

Sextortion is a cyber-enabled crime during which victims are lured into performing sexual acts in front of a webcam.
Unbeknown to victims, their actions are recorded by criminals who then use the video footage in an attempt to blackmail individuals.

Hide AdPolice in the Police Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon said: “We have seen an increase in ‘sextortion’ reports across the country recently and this has included some cases in our district over the last few days.
“What starts out as seemingly a bit of fun can quickly turn nasty and can potentially happen to anyone at any time.
“Do you know who you are talking to online? Do not accept friendship requests on social media from complete strangers and do not get lured into compromising situations.
